A Probable History of the Golden Family
of Newberry, South Carolina Since 1761
Updated 2025.11.02

Introduction
It is probable that our Goldens and the Jeter family of Caroline County, formerly part of Essex County, Virginia shared a common relative.
This kinship would have occurred between 1710 and 1770. All of our Golden DNA lines that branched since 1770 carry DNA matches with living Jeters. There are strong matches focused on the Union and Newberry County areas of South Carolina where both of our families lived. In addition, there are many strong matches among the Jeter lines that went west from Virginia instead of south to South Carolina.
The DNA match is strong enough that some Golden lines that branched after 1770 have matches with the same living Jeter.[1]Match is with a living Jeter from the Tarrant County, Texas area. TIMELINE
1707: John William Jeter of England settles in the Port Royal, Virginia area. He had 11 children with each of his two wives: (Mary) Elizabeth Vaughan, and 1686–1730, and Sarah Dozier, 1707–1752.
1711-1720: John William (William) Jeter born in Amelia or Essex County, Virginia between 1711-1720, various dates of birth given in various genealogies. He would pass away in 1797 in the Edgefield County, South Carolina area. Although almost all records reflect the family as living in Edgefield County or District, it appears they resided in the area of what is today Santuc, Union County, South Carolina, about 30 miles north of where our Goldens lived in Newberry.
