TIMELINE

1790: Not found listed by name. Have not analyzed age and gender of males in other Golden households to determine if Thomas W. Golden was possibly present. Birth year is given as 1775-1781. Would have been age 9-15 in 1790.

1800: Thomas Golden listed as age 16-25 (1775-1784), with a female age 16-25 in the household, and male under age 10 (this would be son Robert Philander Golden 1790–1849). Edgefield, South Carolina. Surname is ‘Goulden’ in the census. [1] 1800; Census Place: Edgefield, South Carolina; Series: M32; Roll: 47; Page: 178; Image: 345; Family History Library Film: 181422 Lived three homesteads over from Aaron Etheridge, a cousin. Lives not far from William Cotney, neighbor to ‘Samuel Gilden‘, who may be Samuel Golden. William and Nellie’s daughter Margaret Frances Golden married into the Cotneys. Son or brother Samuel Golden is of age to be in the 1800 census but is missing.

William Cotney Samuel Golden

~~~ 1804 Dec 15: … Thomas Golden, probable son or brother of William Golden: … Thomas Golden and John Pike are witnesses to Daniel Cotney deeding 200 acres for $300 to William Cotney. Land is located on the waters of Little Saluda River on Beaverdam Creek. This land is part of an original 762 acres granted to Kisiah Cotney on 19 Feb 1791, subsequently conveyed to Daniel Cotney on 23 Mar 1798. [2]Edgefield County, South Carolina Deed Books 30 and 31, abstracted by Carols Wells, pg 212. Heritage Books, Inc. Note: Margaret Frances Golden, daughter of William Golden, married William Jackson Cotney. She would sign away all dower rights to this property on 15 May 1806. 1805 Feb 29th: Thomas Golden residing at Beaver Dam Creek, Saluda, South Carolina. Is witness to a land transaction for Sarah Edwards to Benjamin Forkner, Deed, $100, sixty seven acres lying on from Thomas Golden’s Spring Branch binding on Joel Etheridge’s land and William Golden. Wit William Calney [probably Cotney], Thomas Harris. /s/ Sarah (x) Edwards. [4]Must find source reference.
—— This 1805 land transaction is the only known documentary reference that  ties very together Thomas Golden with William Golden all living together … with Etheridges nearby … as well as Cotneys, one of whom would marry a daughter of William Golden. Thomas Sr probably passed away in 1790s, after 1792. There is a 1792 land transaction between Thomas and the Milhouse family. [5]Footnote needed. Appears to have been a landlease.
1806: Per genealogies, birth of Thomas’ son Thomas Golden Jr, in South Carolina. Passed away after 1880 (age 74 in census) at De Soto Parish, Louisiana, USA [6]1880; Census Place: 4th Ward, De Soto, Louisiana; Roll: 452; Family History Film: 1254452; Page: 292A; Enumeration District: 025; Image: 0446
Gouldman Connections
Golden-Gouldman-Brister DNA Connections — A Virginia Gouldman family member has a DNA match with a Thomas W. Golden (c1775 SC – 1839 MS) descendant. Thomas was son or grandson of William Golden (c1750 VA/SC-1809 SC) and Thomas Golden (Goulden bef.1730 VA? – aft.1792 Newberry, SC).
~
The Brister line also descends [11]See private working notes for more info on this DNA match. from the James Noel family (1680-1741). The Noels were neighbors of the Gouldman family, and at least one Gouldman married with a Noel: Daniel Noel 1700-1770 married Elizabeth Gouldman c1702-aft.1744.
~
MYSTERY GOULDMAN: The parents of Elizabeth Gouldman (c1702-1744) are listed as Francis Gouldman 1682–aft 1702 and an Elizabeth LNU 16/17??–1723 … it is unknown how they fit in the Gouldman tree. There was a Francis Gouldman c1658/1667-1716 married to Mary Meador, Dorothy Awbrey and Martha Tomlin — none named Elizabeth. An unexplained Noel-Gouldman marriage was recorded in the Winston and Allied Family History of 1927, but that was an Elizabeth Noel with __?__ Gouldman. The Winston author noted that the first name of the Gouldman was unknown.
~
This is an atDNA match which means that the person matching has DNA from a third person that Golden and Gouldman have in common. The Golden DNA connection can be explained: Brister family is a known direct descendant. There are no known kin to the Gouldman family within this genealogy. One possibility is that the Gouldman DNA match is present because Goldens carry Gouldman DNA.
Errors
~~~ An April 6, 2022 version of this page incorrectly discussed 1830 data for this family. Info corrected on 8 Apr 2022.
~~~
There is not an 1830 census for the Thomas W. Golden family. The 1830 census shown on most genealogies is for a Thomas Golding family in the Newberry, South Carolina area that was listed as ‘Golden’.
… In discussing Martha R. Roxanna and whether she was of age to be mother to daughter Elizabeth, the following incorrect statement was made:  … In 1830, there was a female age 15-19 in the household. Daughter Elizabeth Golden was age 11 (c1819) in 1830. All known children born before 1825. If the 1830 age 15-19 female was Martha then she would have been just age 4-8 when daughter Elizabeth born (1811-1815).
