A Probable History of the Golden Family
of Newberry, South Carolina Since 1761
Updated 2026.01.24

This Golden line is y700 tested[1] and part of our pre-1750 Virginia Golden family.
William Golden, c1745 VA – 1810 KY, and Alice Margaret (Peggy) Maupin, c1745 VA –1788 KY were married by 1765, although genealogies indicate that their first born William Golden, could have been born as early as c1760 Albemarle, VA and d1866 KY. Records do not exist for any of the marriages or births within the first generation.
Descendant lines are plentiful although as of 2025 it would appear that descendant male Golden lines are near extinct. Of the two known living male Goldens, one male is in his 70s and there is no known marriage or children associated with the second male Golden line.
Y700 DNA testing was done in 2025 on a male descendant of Hardin Golden / Golding Sr, 1773–1840, married to Catherine Bruce,
1774–1860. Hardin Golden was the 4th child and 3rd son of William Golden and Alice Margaret (Peggy) Maupin.
