The surname individuals below may appear in your DNA matches or among genealogies.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Awbrey (Aubrey) / Alice Awbrey, 1643-1698 … married to Thomas Gouldman-Keeling, c1640-1684.

Awbrey (Aubrey) / Henry Awbrey, 1610 Wales to 1694 Virginia … married to Mary, c1625-1664.

Aubrey (Awbry) / William Aubrey “the extravagant” of Abercynrig, Wales, 1581 to 1631 … married to Elizabeth Johnes (Jones), 1585-1650.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Claiborne — see Dandridge

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Creech — DNA and intermarriage with the Creech family exist via both the Noel line (Charles Albert Noel, 1882–1936, and Eunice Mae Creech, 1893–1946) and the Etheridge line (Mary Etheridge 1710-1790, Mother of Benjamin Creech Sr, 1724-1780). This Noel line reaches back via DNA matches with the Noels of Essex, Virginia from with Elizabeth Noel, born before 1715, daughter of Daniel Noel (b.c1665 VA) who is believed to have married a Thomas Gouldman / Goulden, probable grandfather or father to William Golden, c1750-1809 of Saluda, Newberry, South Carolina, progenitor of our Golden line.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Dandridge — Dandridge DNA would appear to come from intermarriage with the Claiborne family. Winifred Claiborne married Francis Gouldman by 1730, but perhaps as early as 1728 (age 14)… Winifred’s parents remain unknown. Numerous DNA matches across various of Francis and Winifred Claiborne Gouldman’s descendants would indicate that she was close to the line of William Claiborne, 1680– 1705/17 Jul 1746, and Nancy Anne Dandridge, 1687–1740. Close association with Dugdale.

———- Dates of birth and death for William Claiborne (1705 or 1746?) and Nancy Anne Dandridge would seem to eliminate them as parents. One older genealogy claims that William Claiborne died in 1705. A somewhat more well documented genealogy claims that he lived until 1746 and died in London, England. May well have been two separate William Claibornes.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Dugdale — Close association with Dandridge.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Ferguson / Naomi Nancy Ferguson, c1626-1690 … married to Leonard Keeling, c1615 to 1689.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Fox / Rebecca Fox, 1660-1714 … married to Tomlin (Thomlin) / Robert Tomlin, 1640-1685.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Godwin family of Isle of Wight, or Nansemond County, Virginia in the 1600/1700s — Goldens descended from Henry Roosevelt Golden, c1904-1987, and Readie Mae Belcher, 1907-1993, are related via Belcher DNA. Godwins share DNA from grandmother Mary Ann Robards Roberts, 1678–1754, married first to William Parker, 1670–1750, and then married to William Moore, 1678–1744, from who descendants would intermarry until John Horton Belcher, Sr, 1797-1882, introduced the Godwin-shared DNA of Mary Ann Robards Roberts into both family lines.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

GOLDING / Richard Golding, 1744-1788, married to Susannah Wilmouth (Susanna Wilmoth), 1744-1837. Although they appear in numerous Ancestry and other genealogies as directly being in our line this is incorrect. YDNA testing shows that our Goldens and the Goldings do not share a common male ancestor. However, there have been intermarriages between descendants and probable Virginia ancestors of both families which can cause atDNA matches.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Golson, Gholson, Gholston, Gulston — These names can pop up in your DNA matches. Their lineage leads back to the same early 1700s/late 1600s neighborhood in Virginia that we came from. However, their DNA match is due to a very recent late 1950s intermarriage with a descendant of Nathaniel Greene Golden (c1812-1883) and Arzela Moore (1825-1886).

NOTE: Due to their Virginia origin and time era, there is a chance of an earlier intermarriage than 1950s. If so, it is not one that I know of (2021).

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

GOULD / Zaccheus Gould, 1589-1668

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Gouldman / Edward Gouldman – c1660 to 1710 … married to Martha Tomlin, 1680-1720.

Gouldman / Thomas Gouldman – c1640 to 1684 … married to Alice Awbrey, 1643-1698.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Holman / DNA matches with Holman, and specifically James Prudence Holman, could indicate descent from Martha Patsy Gouldman, 1756-1842. Martha was daughter of Francis Gouldman and Winifred Claiborne.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Hooper / DNA matches with the Hooper family of Jackson County, North Carolina are primarily due to marriage of Larkin Washington Hooper, 1841–1915, with Elizabeth Jane “Eliza” “Louisa” Golden, 1846–1918, daughter of Joseph James Golden, 1818–1900, and Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Wilson, 1822–1881.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Hopper / DNA matches with Hoppers should be primarily among Henry Roosevelt Golden family, 1907-1987, a Nathaniel Green Golden descendant. Hoppers however may show up in unexpected places via intermarriage.

>>> An unusual factoid about these Hoppers: We are an exact 25 marker yDNA match, but not 37 marker. DNA mapping indicates that we had the same grandfather back about 1500-2000 BC … our lines split approximately in the BENELUX area. Hoppers migrated on to the English Isles and we went north into Scandanavia. An old Virginia family, there may be Golden DNA matches that reach back to: Blagrove, Blagro “Grover” Hopper, 1695–1768.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Jones / Elizabeth Johnes (Jones), 1585-1650 … married to William Aubrey “the extravagant” of Abercynrig, Wales, 1581 to 1631.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Keeling / Leonard Keeling – c1615 to 1689 … married to Naomi Nancy Ferguson, c1626-1690.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Knight / Jacob Knight – 1795 to 1865 USA. (S18823 > FGC20588 > BY16426 > BY18429 > BY16435)

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Kullaslakten see Trulsson / Nils Trulsson … Swedish kin per yDNA SNP testing.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Marcum / … Marcums (Markham) appear across various trees at unpredictable moments. There has been significant intermarriage with Marcums across various branches of Golden, Gouldman and allied families. Appearance of a Marcum DNA match should not be construed as indicating kinship via any one specific branch of our family tree. Each Marcum match needs research as to kinship.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Markham / see Marcum …

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Noel / Elizabeth Noel — … married to ____ Gouldman.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Rottenberry — Search DNA matches for ‘Rottenberry’, which could/should lead you to: Elizabeth Ann “Nanny” Rottenberry, 1733-1779, a Raines/Rainey/Shands great-grandaughter. This suggestion is offered as a shortcut to find DNA links back to the Rainey family that we have DNA matches with, related to the Gouldmans. See Shands.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Scoggins / Scroggins — Family members have a significant number of DNA matches with William and Nelly descendants. Due to multiple family intermarriage events, and intermarriage with other families intermarried with our Goldens: a separate chapter will be devoted to the Scoggins family.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Shands — Golden, Gouldman and Raines/Rainey lines have a common connection (MRCA?) in the Alexander Shands (1630–1691) and Helen Baxter (1631–1693) line. There is no known Shands MRCA in either the Golden or Gouldman line.

+++ For Goldens and Raines/Rainey, this connection appears to be Shands/Baxter child Elizabeth (Akels or Lucina?) Shands (1662–1705) married to William (Thomas) Raines aka Rainey (yDNA tested, 1650–1721). It is this William Raines/Rainey that reached some ‘agreement’ with Francis Gouldman in 1715/16 — Francis died late in 1716 and it appears the agreement was not paid for, so a lawsuit waged against the Gouldman estate and settled in 1718, final settlement by Thomas Waring in 1719. It is also this Raines line that is closely associated with Barbara Goulden, c1720-1792/4 of Randolph County, NC. The William Raines/Rainey line moved to Randolph County after the lawsuit was completed. For more info, see https://goldengenealogy.com/how-we-became-gouldens-maybe-rains-vs-gouldman-in-1718/

+++ For Gouldmans, this connection appears to be Shands/Baxter child: … Thomas Shands (1660–1693) married to Frances Jane Harrison (1653–1713).

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Snowden / Gracie Snowden, 1780 SC – 1860 XX  … The Snowdens were recent arrivals in South Carolina, with John Samuel Snowden, 1754 N.IRE – 1820 SC, arriving from Ireland before 1779. His daughter Gracie Snowden (1780-1860) married John Golden, 1780 XX – 1850 XX. This John Golden has no identified parents … there are however definitely multiple atDNA matches with the Golden-Snowden line and our own Goldens.

—- Crossing paths! John and Gracie’s son Samuel Snowden Golden , 1819 XX – 1896 XXX, married Epsey Irene Kelly, 1821–1895 … the Kellys were close neighbors to William and Nelly (some miles away just over the current Union County line, but close). Our Goldens have DNA connections to this same Kelly line. From 2016-2020 I worked for a ggg-grandson of these Kellys in Washington DC: Thomas Kelly. Small world.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Stephens / Shadrach Stephens – 1761 Wales, RevWar in South Carolina, 1837 Canada – see Ancestry. Shadrach may have known our Goldens during the Revolutionary War. He lived at the right place at the right time and was a loyalist. His yDNA SNPs S18823 > FGC20588 > FGC20605 > BY67962 also matches our own.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Swords / Our Goldens share an unexplained DNA connection with the Swords family of South Carolina and Georgia. Nathaniel Green Golden (1783-aft.1822) was appointed Commissioner of Roads, Bridges and Ferries in 1821, resigning in 1822. A co-commissioner was a Swords family member: xxxxxxxxxx

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Tomlin (Thomlin) / Martha Tomlin, 1680-1720 … married to Edward Gouldman, c1660-1710.

Tomlin (Thomlin) / Robert Tomlin, 1640-1685 … married to Rebecca Fox, 1660-1714.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Trulsson / Nils Trulsson (AKA Kullaslakten) – born c1658, Vasby, Sweden. (S18823 > FGC20588 > FGC20605 > FGC20581 > Y83414 > Y93719 > BY35138). DNA SNP analysis shows that male Goldens of our line share a long history of grandfathers with this Swedish family. Our shared grandfathers were S18823 > FGC20588 > FGC20605 > FGC20581. There are living descendants today living where Nils Trulsson settled in the late 1600s.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Wilmouth / Susannah Wilmouth (Susanna Wilmoth), 1744-1837, married to Richard Golding, 1744-1788.

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

Wofford – James Alex Wofford (1923-1998) is a descendant of Samuel Golden (c1770-1857) and Lydia Parrish, brother, or son to our William and Nellie Golden. Wofford lines are atDNA-tested.
