The individuals below may appear in your DNA matches.

~~~~~~
Descendants of William and Nellie Golden have some pre-1750 kinship to the Goldthwaite family of England and Salem, Massachusetts.
This kinship is most likely pre-1650-75.
Search for Goldthwaite on Ancestry.com and there should be plentiful matches with Goldthwaite family in their trees. Finding these matches just on their own does not indicate kinship. Some of these trees have links that route immigration paths of Massachusettan descendants through Virginia in the Middlesex County area. Middlesex was heavily settled by Massachusettans in the 1630-1650s in the Gloucester township area. They often came from Gloucester MA and settled in Gloucester VA. [1]A Warren family tree from the 1600s and Gloucester, Virginia area is very interesting in that it contains many family names that will appear in DNA matches with our Goldens. Things to consider:
  • trees of DNA matches with Goldthwaite therein focus on a particular Massachusetts line that is pre-1650;
  • tree matches appear to exist for all known Golden descendants, both male and female.   • the ages of relationship DNA matches with Goldthwaites in their tree is consistent: 5th-8th cousin. [4]DNA cM size is 8-20, with 12-20 cM being most common.
Goldthwaites that you may find in your DNA matches should have linkage to, or include all of the following:
  • Samuel Goldthwaite, 1637-1718, born and died at Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Married to Elizabeth Cheever, 1645–1726.
  • Elizabeth Goldthwaite (King), 1642-1718, born and died at Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Married to John Thomas King, 1638–1717.
  • Ezekiel Goldthwait, Esq, 1710–1782, born and died at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Married to Elizabeth Cheever, 1713–1794.
  • Thankful Goldthwaite (Elliot), 1765 MA – 1814 VT. Married to Thaddeus Elliot, 1763–1844.
CHEEVERGoldthwaites seem to have a fondness for the Cheever family. Two married Elizabeth Cheevers. Oddly enough, some of our Goldens have direct lineage DNA matches with Cheever family members that has a DNA cM of 10-20 cM, same as Goldthwaites. For those Goldens not find a DNA match with a living Cheever family member, you will have numerous DNA matches with trees having relevant Cheevers in their lineage.
1 A Warren family tree from the 1600s and Gloucester, Virginia area is very interesting in that it contains many family names that will appear in DNA matches with our Goldens. Per an unsourced Warren family genealogy, Nelly Golden came from Virginia in the Albemarle area, married a Warren about 1762 (divorced 1795-98). These Warrens were nearby neighbors of our Goldens in Newberry, South Carolina. Eleanor, aka Ellender Golden, witnessed a last will and testament of Charles Warren, son of Nelly Golden Warren, in 1802.
2 About ‘Albemarle’ … there is a difference between Albemarle County, west of Richmond VA (founded 1744, home to Thomas Jefferson and Charlottesville) and Albemarle Parish which today is predominantly Surry and Sussex County, Virginia. Albemarle Parish is close to the eastern Virginia region of Middlesex county.
3 2022 updates to Ancestry.com allow for atDNA to be parsed and to indicate whether a DNA match is maternal, paternal, both or unknown. In preliminary searches of six Golden descendants across the lines of Issac, Nathaniel Greene and Samuel Golden, the Goldthwaite lines have reliably indicated ‘maternal line’ for those with Golden mothers and ‘paternal line’ for those with Golden fathers, or Golden grandparents.
4 DNA cM size is 8-20, with 12-20 cM being most common.
