Origin of our Golden family immediately pre-1760 settlement in Newberry, South Carolina was probably in the Albemarle and Goochland area outside of Richmond, Virginia by 1720 at the latest.

There exists a yDNA match with a descendant Golden line of William Golden (1745–1810) and Alice Peggy Maupin (1745–1788)[1]FamilyTreeDNA yDNA testing of 2024. This Golden line is known to have lived in the Albemarle/Goochland area before moving to Kentucky at some time between 1778-1781. A son was supposed born in Kentucky, 1781: John Golden, born 7 Mar 1781 at Grassy Creek, Pendleton County, Kentucky.

Our own William Golden line was born probably about 1745-1750 in Virginia. It is unlikely that a father would have two sons named William Golden, even if born about the same year. We could assume then that they had different fathers, each born probably before 1725-1727.

DNA matches strongly suggest a candidate set of grandparents for these two Golden lines, names of the parents unknown but each having a son named William Golden born about 1745-1750. The grandparents could be Thomas Golden / Goalder (1690–) and Elizabeth (Eliza) Goare / Gore (1692–1766), married 12 Jan 1708 at nearby Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia.[2]The marriage of Thomas Golden / Goalder and Elizabeth (Eliza) Goare / Gore is listed within Christchurch parish records: Christ Church Parish, Virginia Marriages, 1653-1812 and Virginia, Select … Continue reading [3]Quite a bit is known about the Goare/Gore family with there being historical records and Elizabeth’s father having left a formal last will and testament naming her when he passed about 1726. … Continue reading

Parents of Thomas Goalder/Golden (born c1690) may have been Thomas Goalder/Golden/Golding and an Anne/Hannah of Christchurch, Lancaster or Middlesex, Virginia. Records exist which suggest their origins as being New England rather than immigrants from the United Kingdom, formed in 1707. Goalder is a rare surname which survives to this day in Virginia in the Tidewater region[4]Living Goalder family members are easy to find via a Google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=goalder+virginia near to Middlesex along both sides of the James River. No known DNA tests exist for living Goalder family members as a test taker.

As for an Albemarle, Virginia region origin for our South Carolina Goldens, an unsourced Warren family genealogy claims that Nellie Golden, probable sister to our William Golden (c1750-1808) married in Albemarle in 1762 to Thomas Warren prior to coming to South Carolina.

In the map above, the Goalder/Golden and Goare/Gore family are living at Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia in 1708 when Thomas Golden marries Elizabeth Gore. The Gore family history in the area goes back to about 1664, and the Goalders appear by 1670.

Albemarle County itself did not exist until 1744, formed from Goochland County. The Warren family genealogy that references Nellie Golden as marrying into their family in 1762 at Albemarle, Virginia is both precise and incredibly inprecise — however it is a major relevation that time is showing to have merit.[5]I have searched for any marriage record of a Golden with a Warren in this region for the decades 1750 and 1760. Can find none as of 2024.

The challenge of preciseness for Nellie Golden marrying at Albemarle, Virginia in 1762 depends a lot on when that statement was written and what was the knowledge of ‘what was Albemarle‘ at the time it was written. Not too far away in the Tidewater region of Virginia was Albemarle Parish which did not cross boundaries with Albemarle County.

Settlement and Early Roadways of Albemarle County, 1725 Onward

It may be best to think of Albemarle as a constantly evolving region at the time our family lived there. What was Albemarle County very much depends upon the year AND whether the writer was keeping up with constant boundary changes.

From a major study of early Virginia documentation compiled by the Commonwealth of Virginia: … “In its original form, Albemarle contained the southern two-thirds of modern Albemarle County, the entirely of the modern counties of Amherst, Buckingham, Nelson, and Fluvanna, and parts of Appomattox, Campbell, and Bedford counties. Albemarleís boundaries were considerably reduced with the creation of Buckingham County (then also containing part of modern Appomattox County) and Amherst County (then also containing present-day Nelson County) in 1761. The year 1762 brought a slight northward expansion of the county boundaries, with the addition to Albemarle of the western portion of Louisa County. This brought Albemarleís western, southern, and northern boundaries to their current locations. With the last reduction in its territory, the creation of Fluvanna County in 1777, Albemarle reached its present size.”[6]ALBEMARLE COUNTY ROADS, 1725-1816, by Nathaniel Mason Pawlett, Faculty Research Historian, 100 pages, book available online in full as PDF at … Continue reading

3 Quite a bit is known about the Goare/Gore family with there being historical records and Elizabeth’s father having left a formal last will and testament naming her when he passed about 1726. All lines of the Goare family seem to have adopted the ‘Gore’ spelling of the surname by early 1700s. Elizabeth’s parents were Joseph Joshua Goare Gore (1666–1726) and Mary Allison (1671–1708). As of 2024, the author has 28 atDNA matches with Gore descendants.
