There are numerous suggestions as to the parents of Thomas Gouldman within online genealogies.

Numerous unsourced genealogies online [1]A quick search of Ancestry, MyHeritage, Geni, etc., will show genealogies claiming William Goldman and Mary Catlett  are parents to Thomas Gouldman, c1640-1684, as well as parents to an Elizabeth, … Continue reading

William and Mary Catlett Gouldman: they married (1621) at the Church of St Margaret at Canterbury, Kent, England. The Catlett family came from nearby Sittenbourne, England.

John Catlett (1624-1670) of Sittenbourne, England would settle in Virginia as one of the first inhabitants of Sittenbourne Parish, Virginia, arriving in Virginia in 1650. [2]Source: Colonial Families of the USA, 1607-1775 for John Catlett Colonial Families of the United States of America, Vol V, pg 137. John Catlett, later Captain and Colonel Catlett, would settle in the same area as Thomas Gouldman later would. The John Catlett family would also have a close community relationship with the Gouldmans, although there is no evidence that a Virginia Catlett married a Virginia Gouldman until several hundred years later.

Some online genealogies claim that William and Mary Catlett Gouldman are parents to a son Thomas Gouldman b1640 at Wokingham, England, with two siblings: an Ann Gouldman and ____. This is a blending of two distinctly different families that can be documented as existing.

No. The Wokingham family were Golde and/or Goulds. We know a lot about them and their son Thomas; see below.

Alternative Parents – Set #2 – Wokingham Goulds

Various online genealogies claim that Thomas Gouldman’s parents were William Golde and Elizabeth Bradford of Wokingham, Berkshire, England.

William Golde married Elizabeth Bradford on 11 Feb 1638 at Saint Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, England, when she was age 19. They did have children and there was a son named Thomas Golde, born 8 Sep 1646 Brighton, Sussex, England.

As for Thomas Golde, we do not know what happened to him, but his birth year of 1646 is much too late for him to be of age to sign contracts and to give legal testimony as did Thomas Gouldman of Virginia in 1662 and 1664-1667. English legal procedure was inflexible about age 21 being the year at which a contract could be signed. Birth in 1646 would have meant that Thomas Gouldman of Virginia would not be eligible until 1667 at the earliest to do the things that he had been doing since 1662.

Gould Connections — Curiously, there are Gouldman DNA connections with a Gould family that settled in Massachusetts early enough to be the parents of Virginia’s Thomas Gouldman.

DNA says: The exact same Massachusetts Goulds are atDNA connections with our Goldens and Virginia Gouldman. The Goulds are yDNA tested. Our Goldens are yDNA tested. The Goulds and our Goldens are not male-line DNA matches. No known yDNA test exists for a Virginia Gouldman.

The unexplained atDNA connection (Ancestry, 23andMe, etc) is with the Massachusetts family of  Zaccheus Gould (1589–1668) and Phebe Deacon (1597–1663), from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. They settled in Massachusetts at some time before 1660.

1 A quick search of Ancestry, MyHeritage, Geni, etc., will show genealogies claiming William Goldman and Mary Catlett  are parents to Thomas Gouldman, c1640-1684, as well as parents to an Elizabeth, Ann, and a fourth child. There is no evidence existing for any of the children being theirs, or for them having any children at all.

>> HOWEVER, circumstances of time, place and the presence of certain families causes me to believe that William and Mary make excellent candidates as Thomas’ parents. Gouldmans and Catletts have been together in Virginia for some 400 years now.

The marriage of William Gouldman  and Mary Catlett is well documented. They married 19 Nov 1621, at St Margaret, Canterbury, Kent, England, per England Marriages, 1538-1973, Indexing Project (Batch) Number M01596-5, System Origin England-EASy, GS Film number 1751625, Reference ID it 2
