Military Service of Virginia Gouldmans and kindred Goldmans

This index was just started on Memorial Day, 29 May 2023. Additions will be made as the genealogy is reviewed. Should be 99% complete by Memorial Day 2024.

Intent is to include Goldman and Gouldman families descended from Thomas Gouldman, c1640-1684. Some German Goldman families that arrived after 1711 adopted the Gouldman spelling of the name and lived closely among Thomas Gouldman descendants. Some of the German Goldman/Gouldman family genealogies may have become blended with Thomas Gouldman lineages. Insufficient DNA and yDNA testing exists to tell them apart. The Gouldman family history is largely undocumented between 1750-1800. CSA. Private, Company F, 22d Georgia Infantry, CSA. Son of Richard M. “Dick” Goldman (1808–1887) and Matilda Cora Trammell (1815–1915).

Virginia Cavalry under command of Captain Sales per wife Emily A. Gouldman in her 7 July 1924 pension application as a CSA widow. Gouldman, John Muscoe (c1842-1921)

Probably served CSA Army. A John M. Gouldman served as a Private, Company F, 55th Infantry, Virginia, with muster as of 10 Mar 1862. Was a POW as of 14 Jul 1863, imprisoned at Loudoun County, Virginia. Son of Richard Henry Gouldman (1804–1874) and Sarah (Sally) Schools (1812–1893).

Gouldman, Lewis Edward “Nick” (1894-1978)

Private, US Army, World War I. … Registered with service aboard Army troop transport ship USS Finland (ID-4543): 26 Nov 1917 thru 15 Jun 1918 … USS Matsonia (ID-1589): 20 May 1919 thru 20 Aug 1919. Son of Charles Morrison Gouldman (1853–1930) and Lulia Dean “Lulie” Gravatt (1856–1921).

Gouldman, Thomas (c1640-1684)

Militia Private in Bacon’s Rebellion (1676); referred to in documents from 1679-1682 as ‘Captain Thomas Gouldman’ … this may have been due to militia or was a honorific due to his public service as a Justice of the Peace, and member of House of Burgesses. Son of … parents unknown, but Bill Golden has a theory that father is Francis Gouldman arrived in Virginia c1640-42.
