The individuals below may appear in your DNA matches.
DNA matches with the Marcum / Markham family of early Virginia are strong. Whether they exist across all early pre-1800 branches of our Golden family is not something I have yet researched. Early records will usually indicate that the surname arrived in Virginia as Markham and within a generation or two became Marcum.
!! 2025: It appears almost certain that our earliest discernible Golden origins was in Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia, at a time when the Marcum / Markham family also lived there via the family of Lewis Markham / Marcum Jr, 1650–1713, and Catherine Newton, 1665–1779.
Per the Markham / Marcum yDNA project[1]See https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/markham-marcumetal/dna-results for Markham / Marcum yDNA project data , there are at least five (5) different lineages. One DNA match (DNADB343) is closely associated with a Belcher line, my grandmother line. This particular Marcum line, identified as Marcum Family Group 5, does not appear to be related to the Middlesex County, Virginia Markhams.[2]Markham / Marcum and Belcher DNA match DNADB343
The Marcum line that is closely associated with our Goldens and early Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia are fairly well yDNA-tested. Y700 testing indicates that this line is R1b R-L21 R-FT163313 R-FTE50517. See Marcum / Markham yDNA Project: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/markham-marcumetal/dna-results
