A Probable History of the Golden Family
of Newberry, South Carolina Since 1761
Updated 2025.06.14
There are strong DNA match connections with the Perry families of South and North Carolina. Our Goldens descend from the South Carolina grandparent line of William Nathan Perry, 1748–1829, and Elizabeth Sikes or Lavender, 1750–1825.
DNA suggests how we are related to the North Carolina family of William Perry Sr, 1753–1818, and Sarah “Sallie” Johnson, 1753–1825, and several other local Perry families. Can find no genealogical connection between the North and South Carolina Perry families.
The individuals below may appear in your DNA matches.

TIMELINE
1748-1759 … William Nathan Perry, c1748–1829, believed to be born in South Carolina. No record or claim of birth, just presence in South Carolina. Alternative birth dates given, with all claiming South Carolina as place of birth: 11 May 1748 / 1750 / 21 Jul 1759. Died 1829 at Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina. Married to Elizabeth Sikes or Lavender, c1750–1825 — no evidence for either being her surname. These are the author’s 5th great-grandparents.
Some online genealogies claim that the parents of William Nathan Perry are Zachariah Perry and Hannah Blish. Why: IDK. Neither ever left New England where they have documented lives. Could William Nathan Perry have come from New England? Yes, although no evidence for that either. DNA indicates kinship with Perry families from North Carolina but no known DNA connections leading back to New England.
My documented kinship with the Perry family begins with daughter Sarah Francis Perry, 1767–1845, married to Benjamin Francis (Franklin) Morgan, 1762–1835. These are my 4th great-grandparents.
