Capt Harvey Herman Golden (1913-2008) and Donice Marie Lee Golden (1923-2000) celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in August 1993.

Harvey and Donice married on September 7, 1943 at Union County, North Carolina, although both came from Upshur County, West Virginia.

Harvey is the son of Hilleary Hampton Golden (1888-1956) and Dessie Mae Howes (1892-1974).

Capt Golden has an obituary worth reading.

+++++ He was proud to be a charter member of the first 4-H club in West Virginia. He was also a member of the 4-H All-Stars.

+++++ Mr. Golden was a graduate of the Upshur County High School with the class of 1932.

+++++ Harvey was a talented musician who played the guitar, violin and mandolin, winning first place in a competition at the West Virginia State Fair.

+++++ World War II: Served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; commissioned Nov 11, 1944 as a 2nd LT U.S. Army. Served in Europe and Pacific Theaters. Cited for heroic action against the enemy and awarded the Bronze Star.

+++++ In the early 1950s, he was selected as the Upshur County Conservation Farmer of the year. His strawberries won the West Virginia Strawberry Sweepstakes in 1965.

+++++ In November 1967, his farm was featured in the Farm Journal magazine.

+++++ After many years serving West Virginia as a tax mapper, he retired from the State Tax Department in 1975.

+++++ He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon and was very active in the Upshur County Senior Citizen Center. He was a member of the American Legion.

=^) …. In 1997, Harvey handily won a spelling bee against his daughters and other contestants at the West Virginia Folk Festival in Glenville. He won numerous awards in the Senior Olympics and was a West Virginia Strawberry Festival Champion in dominos and checkers.
