Parents of Lucinda “Lucy” Smith (Wagoner), 1832–1910, and was her mother named Nancy Golden?

Genealogies have become blended for the parents of Lucinda “Lucy” Smith, b. 20 Jan 1832 Surry County NC; d. 26 Mar 1910 at Lone Jack, Jackson County MO. Her death certificate show Nancy Golden as her mother BUT it does appear that another name may have been written on the death certificate and then erased.

Lucy Smith Wagoner death certificate

One of the giveaways between the two Charles Smiths and their marriage to a Nancy are the birth, death and marriage dates. A Charles Smith married a Nancy Golden at Surry County NC in 1826 and the other Charles Smith married a Nancy Wright in 1830 in Virginia.

Lucinda’s mother Nancy Golden was born about 1810 and Nancy Wright was born 19 Dec 1809. When searching for hints on Ancestry, the info for Nancy Wright dominates the possible choices and search results for records that may be associated with Nancy Golden.

There appears to be no documentation for Nancy Golden‘s existance other than her daughter’s death certificate and her marriage record, witnessed by a Smith.

? What happened to Nancy Golden that married Charles Smith in 1826? That remains a bit of a mystery.

  • A few online genealogies claim that her parents were Thomas Golding, 1776–1843, and Elizabeth Cook, 1778–1860 … yet Golding descendant genealogies do not show Nancy’s marriage to anyone, much less to a Charles Smith.
  • The Charles Smith that married Nancy Golden in 1826 in Surry NC moved off to Missouri where he passed away 16 October 1879 at Lone Jack, Jackson County, Missouri. Genealogies for him list wife Nancy Smith‘s death as 1878, but that is the death date of Nancy Wright (Smith) who died in Virginia.
  • To further complicate things, FindaGrave indicates Charles Smith‘s wife was named Nancy Easley Smith, indicating her surname was Easley … AND YET a child appears to be named Thomas Golden Smith,[1]FindaGrave for Thomas Golden Smith: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/11775162/thomas-golden-smith 1 Oct 1828 to 27 Oct 1899 Lone Jack, Jackson County, Missouri … AND YET the 1820 census shows that this Golden family probably lived in ‘Capt Easleys District, Surry, North Carolina’,[2]1820 census for household of Thos Goldin, Enumeration Date 7 Aug 1820, Capt Easleys District, Surry, North Carolina, USA so perhaps she actually carried the middle name of Easley.

+++++++++++++

There are many Goldens in Surry County NC that were once Goldings from Orange County VA, and there are Goldens that are not kin to the Goldings at all.

!! Am a Golden that is constantly being matched in DNA with Surry Golding/Goldens. Per yDNA testing we are not the same males lines, although both are R1b. Have backtracked many of these DNA matches and it appears that we share Foster grandparents from the ancestral line of Elizabeth Foster (Golding).
