Robert Walter Golden
Marine Corps Corporal
Born: February 27, 1945
Died: June 19, 1966
Robert Walter Golden was the oldest of three children at the time of his death, and two more brothers were born after his death. Robert lived with his stepfather, his mother, his sister, Jean and his brother Laurence, until he enlisted in the service. His childhood was less than perfect, dealing with a stepfather who didn’t really accept him. He spent a lot of time with his younger brother Laurence, fishing and hunting and playing baseball. Laurence was 15 years old when Robert died and he was devastated by his brother’s death.
Robert was a quiet, loving, caring and gentle person who is missed every day by many people. He had a “special girl” in California with whom he had talked about settling down. Robert was making plans for his future, since his tour of duty was almost over, when he was killed in a helicopter crash. He worked so hard and never got to realize his dreams of a wife and a family.
Robert’s best friend was on the same helicopter with him when it crashed, and they died together. They are buried side by side at Fort Snelling Cemetery.
Robert enlisted in the service to help better himself, and to help his country. He did give the ultimate sacrifice to his country when he died.
